2020 Conference paper

Oil pipeline leak detection using through-the-coating written fiber Bragg grating sensors

Stephen J. Mihailov, Robert B. Walker, James Neumann, Manny De Silva, Dan Grobnic, and Cyril Hnatovsky

Optical Fiber Sensors Conference 2020 Special Edition · OSA Technical Digest · paper Th4.12

Through-the-coating femtosecond written FBGs were integrated into hydrocarbon responsive packages that apply or release strain when exposed to toluene or crude oil, creating an optical trigger for pipeline leak detection.

2024 Master’s thesis

Developing a Multi-axis Femtosecond Laser Micromachining Platform for Laser Induced Refractive Index Modification: Fiber Bragg Gratings, Waveguides, and Beyond

James Edward Neumann · Supervisor: Professor Christopher Smelser

Master of Applied Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering · Carleton University · 83 pages

Nominated for the senate medal, this thesis documents the design, construction, software integration, and experimental validation of a multi axis femtosecond laser micromachining platform. Its capabilities were demonstrated through laser induced refractive index modification and the inscription of fibre Bragg gratings and waveguide structures.
